FDGA Announces the Adopt-a-Legislator Program
The Adopt-a-Legislator program is planned and coordinated by the Legislative Advocacy Committee of Fair Districts GA. The program grew out of the frustration many have reported with rope line advocacy along with a belief that deeper knowledge will lead to better communication.
Organization: The program pairs teams of 2-3 citizen advocates with a selection of 2-4 legislators. Each team learns about its set of legislators and their districts, talks with the legislators and their staff members, and finds out about the ideas and attitudes of their legislators toward the Democracy Act and redistricting reform. The teams report what they learn to the larger group so that other citizen advocates do our work more effectively.
Training: Regular training events will be planned for teams, starting with the organizational meeting on April 13. At this initial meeting, Jeff Willard will help us understand how to communicate with people who do not share our own ideas and values. He will also discuss the skills needed to be a citizen advocate for particular legislation. Ongoing training will include communication skills, the legislative process, the Democracy Act, and other topics suggested by members of the teams.
Meetings: Teams will meet together approximately every 2 months and more frequently when the Georgia General Assembly is in session. Some meetings will use video conferencing.
